The "Gateway to Europe"

Every year, hundreds of thousands of African migrants and refugees flee famine, genocide, and tyranny for what they believe to be the greener pastures of Europe. The "refugee highway" takes them through the northern part of the African continent. Libya, sometimes called the "Gateway to Europe" due to being at the end of the "refugee highway," is the site of a number of refugee camps filled with vulnerable people seeking a better life elsewhere.

Many of these people end up being tricked into domestic servitude, forced labor, bonded labor, or sex trafficking upon arrival in Europe. Others end up being sold into enslavement in Libya. In fact, many Libyan refugee centers have established links to human trafficking networks. This, coupled with devastating airstrikes in July of 2019, is why United Nations has called for Libya to close its refugee camps.
