Give much-needed school supplies for children formerly trapped in domestic servitude
Volunteer Opportunities: Yes
The Children for Change Cambodia center has been sitting on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, in the midst of the city’s red light district, for the past seven years. The organization formerly operated as Action to End Exploitation (AEE), a Canadian non-profit organization. In November 2012, AEE closed due to changes in the personal lives of the Canadian AEE Directors. Plans were made to place the children with alternative NGOs, and the staff prepared to donate equipment to fellow charitable causes. The children and their families were resistant to the closure, which acted as testament to the importance of the center in the local community. Community members arrived at the center daily, in expectation that services would be resumed and encouraged the staff to consider alternatives to closure. The community and children’s enthusiasm galvanized the team to keep the center open. With the backing of American non-profit Cultural Quest Foundation and a bedrock of volunteers and supporters, AEE re-opened under the name Children for Change Cambodia.
